Events

GirlUp Mississauga had planned several events, on our own and in collaboration with other chapters of GirlUp in order to empower women and our community. See for yourself...

Dare2Donate

In the month of February, Girl up Mississauga was able to initiate a creative fundraiser event with the goal of supporting indigenous women and children in need. The executives of Girl up Mississauga collectively choose a women’s shelter named Anduhyaun. Anduhyaun Inc aims to aid Indigenous women and their children to find safe spaces/environments in which they can rebuild their lives and homes. As we were and still are stuck in a remote environment due to the global pandemic, Girl Up Mississauga strived to create an engaging event for this fundraiser. So, the executives developed a Dare to Donate strategy where any group member was able to be dared by a donor! Through this event, Girl Up Mississauga was able to raise $280! Currently, GirlUp Mississauga is collaborating with Champions for Change in University of Toronto's Mississauga Campus to raise money for the Mississauga Food Bank using the Dare2Donate system.

In the month of March, GirlUp Mississauga was able to team up with GirlUp Brampton and GirlUp London to develop an inspiring summit in honour of Women’s Day which featured many speakers, workshops and prizes. This summit was two days in length and took place on March 3 and 4, 2020. The first day was dedicated to Women in Sports where Tina Finelli, the co-founder of See What She Can Do,  spoke at our summit and led multiple workshops. See What She Can Do empowers women to get active and break down any barriers which prevent women from partaking in sports. Their goal is to achieve gender equity and diverse environments in the world of sports. The second day of the summit was dedicated to women in arts where Gerda Boateng (@gerdacreates on Instagram), a Ghanian Canadian illustrator, spoke of her experience with the arts. During the latter part of Women in Arts, our President Abeer ran a crash course called Intro to Intersectionality where she spoke to the concept of intersectionality and connected to the audience over a discussion about body positivity. This event was created with the goal of connecting ambitious women together and speaking of the many achievements which they have been able to accomplish despite gender gaps, etc.

#She's The

Power

On May 28th, 2021, GirlUp Mississauga held their first solo virtual event, #She'sThePower: Women in Law and Politics. The event focused on and interacted with two inspirational figures who experienced/are experiencing what it is like to be a woman in law and politics. The first speaker, Bonnie Crombie, guided us along her journey of pursuing business, then becoming Mayor and the many individuals who inspired her to become our very own Mayor of Mississauga. Our second speaker was the Dean of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, Donna E. Young, who spoke about her experiences throughout her journey in law and her current experiences as being the only Black Dean of a Law School in Canada. Overall, we can say with certainty that these women inspired the attendees and GirlUp Mississauga's very own team to pursue their dreams!

On October 2nd, 2021, GirlUp Mississauga will be hosting their first ever in-person event, Paint the Night. This event is a wonderful opportunity for members of the community to come together and have an open conversation while painting. The Paint Night is meant to be an open and safe space to discuss topics such as sexual violence and body positivity, topics that we are not alone in experiencing. In addition to painting, this event also serves to help The Mississauga Food Bank. To attend, community members are asked to bring in a non-perishable food item, which will then be donated. Paint The Night will be held from 3pm-5pm @ Jack Darling Park in Mississauga in person while following all COVID regulations. We request all attending members to bring their own paint supplies, thus to minimize contact and keep everyone safe. Bring your snacks, masks, donations and supplies and get ready to Paint the Night away with GirlUp Mississauga.

GirlUp Mississauga has also created many programs in order to prepare our local youth for their future academic careers.

Mentorship Program

GirlUp Mississauga has developed a mentorship program to connect high school students to second, third, and fourth year students in various post-secondary institutions across Ontario. The purpose of this is to ease the transition between high school and post-secondary. We recognize how difficult it can be to gather adequate information regarding programs and school life online, so we wanted to break down that barrier for the next stream of youth. Currently, applications have closed but will reopen during August of 2021.

GirlUp Mississauga had opened up positions for students to represent us within their schools. The goal of this program is to expand the reach for GirlUp Mississauga and to engage more students, regardless of their gender, to advance gender equality and equity. We believe that education and engagement on women's rights should begin early and we are working to provide resources to encourage just that. Currently, applications have closed but will reopen during August of 2021.
